This Marion Lake cabin was a passion project of Lumber Depot owners, Chris & Peggy. They bought the property as a place to enjoy throughout the summer. It quickly became home for the pair, and they poured their efforts into making it so. It’s undergone a number of projects in the past few years, and the family has enjoyed it throughout the remodeling process.

THE BEFORE

Before the Ruttens got their hands on the project, it was a squatty place that didn’t take advantage of the generous views of Marion Lake. Chris and Peggy were determined to open it up to the lake, as well as open up the space to better suit family gatherings and entertaining large groups of family and friends.

THE MONEY WALL

The first order of business was taking advantage of the beautiful Marion Lake views. The roof was raised and peaked to allow for a vaulted ceiling in the living space. With the taller ceiling, larger windows were added to open up to the lake views and let in plenty of natural light. We like to call this the money wall, because it showcases the beautiful property that you’ve worked hard for.

THE CARPORT

The existing home had a carport, which the Ruttens turned into an inviting entry and deck with plenty of seating in shade or sun for visitors of all kinds.

DOUBLE ISLAND

Using the unique footprint of the existing building made the design of the home interesting. Peggy worked her design magic to come up with a kitchen plan that features two islands–one for prep and one that acts as a buffet (or a bar) while entertaining.

BENCH SEATING AREA

In their previous home, the Ruttens enjoyed a bench seating area. The memories made around the kitchen table are ones their kids always remember. They knew they needed to incorporate another bench seating area. It’s perfect for the couple to enjoy dinners on their own or to pull up extra chairs when the family gathers around.

MASTER BATHROOM

The master bathroom features a custom walk-in tile shower courtesy of Thiel Tile & Stone. The vanity features a tower for extra storage.
